The beginning of Kravitz Duddy
Duddy and his friends loved pulling pranks, especially on their teachers. Not one teacher was able to tolerate this class of trouble markers. Later on in this particular part of the story, we start to understand why Duddy might be acting like a rebel. He has a really hard time making friends outside of his community because he isn’t surrounded by boys who have lived the same things he has. These other boys were born in a good and wealthy family which makes Duddy left out of their activities.
Since this story was written in 1959, the culture and language was very different from what we know today. This means that the vocabulary was sometimes harder to understand and there were a few words that needed to be checked in the dictionary. For example, the word Goyishe (page 5, line 18) is a Hebrew/ Yiddish word that refers to someone who is not Jewish. This word isn’t part of our everyday life but this story has educated us on a few new words.
