Reasons for becoming an author
Mordecai Richler started thinking about becoming an author during his years in High School. At that time, he started abandoning most of the Orthodox practices he had been taught. A few years later, when he was in Sir George William College, he decided to quit his studies to pursue his dream of becoming an author.
After quitting Sir George William College at the age of only 19, Mordecai Richler decided to travel through Europe to start his career as a writer. His desire to leave Montréal and move to Europe was sparked by the story of the Lost Generation.
The Lost Generation is a group of American expatriate authors that lived in Paris during the 1920s. It also more commonly refers to the generation that came of age during World War One. It was lost because the values that they learned during their childhood were no longer relevant in a post-war society. Also, the Americans adopted a “back to normal” policy that didn't do well with people and this is why the authors of the Lost Generation expatriated themselves in Paris.
